Janice, a Carmella Rose Foundation community health worker, met a client at a men’s homeless shelter who had multiple needs. In addition to suffering from anxiety and depression, the client complained of ear, nose and throat (ENT) issues that stemmed from an assault the year prior.
Janice helped the client get established with a primary care physician and schedule dental and vision appointments. As a result of the appointments, the client was referred to an ENT doctor who determined he needed surgery. To help remove barriers to care, Janice assisted the client with arranging transportation to get to each doctor appointment that was scheduled.
Beyond addressing health concerns, Janice helped the client with the housing process which led to him obtaining housing. Humble Hearts, a nonprofit that helps people in need, enabled the client to furnish his apartment. The client currently has a part-time job at a nursery and is enjoying living on his own out of the shelter.
The client is very proud and grateful for the assistance that Janice provided. Janice shared the following about her work with this client: “I received a call from the client one day and he told me that every time he calls me he always needs my help and that this call was just to say hello and see how I was doing. Needless to say, he made my day.”
